Forestry and Wildlife
(...contd.)

Tasks:
  1. Pilot Forest Inventory - Develop a current forest stand type map from satellite data for a representative, multi-county area of the state, augment with photo and ground inventory plots to generate layers showing volume and distribution by timber type and ownership, and design a system that would combine spatial and resource data components into a visual on-line system that would allow assessment of forest productivity for any user-defined area.
  1. New Imaging Systems - Evaluate LIDAR, digital frame camera, and CARTERRA images for forest inventory utility, determine economic feasibility of their use compared to traditional means, and integrate their data analyses into an automated aerial stand inventory and monitoring system.
  1. Wildlife Habitat Management - Use remote sensing to characterize the impact of agricultural field border management practices on wildlife habitat, weed and pest populations, and crop yield characteristics.

Deliverables:

  1. A report of results of forest inventory management system to constituency groups and report of feedback resulting in system revisions.
  2. A report comparing the bias and precision of growth and yield predictions as compared to ground-truth data collected.
  3. Cost/benefit analysis report for an automated system incorporating remote sensing versus traditional stand inventory data collection and product required. Resolutions for each parameter will be determined and analyzed for cost effectiveness.
  4. Documented methodology/process flow for utilizing the information/data from the automated system. This may include program scripts and any graphic interfaces developed.
  5. Accuracy assessment of parameters measured.
  6. Incorporate inventory systems into courses offered and extension outreach activities.
  7. A report quantifying opportunity costs of participation in field border management programs.
  8. A report quantifying field border management effects on weed and insect distribution, using remote sensing as a tool for detection.
