Thrust Area: Sustainable and Efficient Infrastructures for Transportation and Utilities Objective: To conduct needs and observability research to provide the foundation for the creation of spatial information technologies derived from space- and air-based remote sensing and operations research that will be used to improve the movement of people and freight and the delivery of utilities. User requirement identification process. Ultimately, the primary benefactors of safer and more reliable infrastructures with higher capacity and lower operating costs will be travelers, shippers, and consumers. However, primary end-users of the resulting remote sensing technology include government policy makers and planners, construction and engineering firms, and utility providers. Additionally, organizations whose purpose is the development of remote sensing technologies and software products are key to bringing the technology down to a usable form for the end-user. Because this is a new research area it is proposed that a strong initial emphasis be placed on identifying and bringing together those benefactors, organizations and individuals that have the requisite background and vision to advise, promote, and assist actively the transportation focus area. Consistent with the general objectives of RSTC, three highly focused roundtable discussions among experts will be conducted to identify:
These roundtable discussions are planned to take place in Washington, D. C., the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Denver, Colorado. These locations are representative of a national focus as well as specific to the states of the two university partners in the National Center for Intermodal Transportation, MSU and University of Denver. Relationship to cross-cutting areas. Frequent meetings are scheduled with the Workforce Development group to collaborate on needs assessment, formal education, and outreach activities. The Computational Modeling group will be relied upon for assistance in developing appropriate decision systems and visualization technologies that effectively analyze data and convey information that has been collected via remote sensing. Industry Partnerships. The transportation research group at MSU has strong linkages with Federal and local transportation agencies. Currently, MSU, in partnership with the University of Denver, is founding the National Center for Intermodal Transportation for the United States Department of Transportation. The Center is charged to improve the national transportation system. On a more regional level, MSU operates the Transportation Research Center for the Mississippi Department of Transportation.Additionally, faculty in the transportation area have a history of working closely with ProModel Corporation, a software company that is initiating a major effort to develop software that will require information on the nations transportation system that may only be obtainable via remote sensing. Further, transportation researchers are exploring collaborative projects with Lockheed Martin. Additional partnerships are being pursued with both private and governmental organizations such as the Department of Energy. |
